Impressions of USA Air Travel

This morning, at 2:00, I returned from my first foray through the USA air transportation system since I left the country on October 1, 2005, my air travel since being confined to Mexico and Cuba. I find myself amazed at the capacity of the system to fairly efficiently move travelers, even through such monstrosities as Chicago’s O’Hare airport.

I do think, though, that the Transportation Security Administration over does it; the requirements to remove one’s shoes, remove electronic equipment from its case, limit liquid to 100 ml, to recount but a few examples of over reach. None of which are required when passing through Mexican or Cuban airports. I understand, of course, that the rules are written but some office bound person in D. C. with little concept of the facility of their application. I find it ridiculous, for instance, to require the removal of one’s shoes because some deranged fellow once tried to torch off his supposedly explosive shoes in flight.

My toothpaste was seized in Chicago by an particularly assiduous inspector who somehow determined the tube contained more than 100 ml. The inspector called for his supervisor when, seeking a bit of entertainment, I asked for a receipt. The supervisor, not at all amused, indicated that I had surrendered the toothpaste and was welcome to its return but could not pass security with it. I have since determined the tube did not contain 100 ml.

I can say, though, that the TSA staff, was uniformly polite and helpful; and found the staff at D. C.’s National Airport to be especially so.

The trip was long, involving stops in Mexico City and Chicago; but it was a real trip.

Relative to the various airlines, my favorite is Mexicana for a number of service related reasons, not the least of which is that the in flight drinks are free.
