Profit Driven Health Care Results

“For American dentists, times have never been better.

“The same cannot be said for Americans’ teeth.

“With dentists’ fees rising far faster than inflation and more than 100 million people lacking dental insurance, the percentage of Americans with untreated cavities began rising this decade, reversing a half-century trend of improvement in dental health.”

So begins the New York Times report, yet another indication that profit is more important to USA policy makers than is their Constitutional duty to “promote the general welfare.”

  • don’t get me go’n on dentist…….seattle is apparently a refuge for dentists that have lost their licenses in other parts of the country…..because of laxer regulations….geez…the last one i tried charged $750 dollars to fill one cavity and I had to endure the presence of a large parrot perched in a cage above my head…..seed hulls and all….apparently keeping aviaries above the dental chair is not regulated here either…..

  • Hey Moon,

Why wouldn’t I want to get you started on a good rant?

I read recently that a couple of Canadian companies are arranging for folks to travel to Cuba for medical care, and that more of their customers than they expected are from the USA.

I have also read reports of Mexican dentists operating vans which travel North to pickup USA clients and return them home after treatment.

I wonder just how far the pendulum will swing in the direction of the type of “we eat our children” capitalism as permitted by the USA citizenry before citizens will demand that government policies makers begin attending to matters of “general welfare.”

The richest country in the world, by far, with a second rate health care system with the highest costs, per capita, in the world.

What new? The rich have, and will, always extracted as much money as possible from the less rich.

It usually isn’t until folks take to the streets and break stuff until change occurs.

  • All that is needed is for the state dept to invite any and all doctors and dentists to the USA and allow them to compete, then you will see prices fall. Competition is always better than govt. decrees or price controls. We run a B&B here in Cordoba, Veracruz and have guests who come just for the DENTAL and MEDICAL care, saving enough money for a free vacation while they are at it. frankania

  • Hi Frank,

Thanks for checking in and for commenting.

I agree completely. I think the doctor, dentist, lawyer, massage therapist, and etc. licensing by the state is a means of restraining trade; and such is encouraged by currently licensed practitioners.

By the way, I expect to be down in your area in late November helping friends with their coffee harvest near Huatusco.
