The Vatican Adds Mortal Sins
The BBC reports “The Vatican has brought up to date the traditional seven deadly sins by adding seven modern mortal sins it claims are becoming prevalent in what it calls an era of ‘unstoppable globalisation’.”
“…Archbishop Girotti said he thought the most dangerous areas for committing new types of sins lay in the fields of bio-ethics and ecology.
“He also named abortion and paedophilia as two of the greatest sins of our times. The archbishop brushed off cases of sexual violence against minors committed by priests as ‘exaggerations by the mass media aimed at discrediting the Church’.”
According to this web site mortal sins “destroy the grace of God in the heart of the sinner.”, as opposed to a venal sin, which according to the same site is a “sin of lesser matter than grave sin. It can also be a sin of grave matter in which the sinner did not fully consent to the sin or did not have knowledge that his actions where sinful.” So I guess one may have his or her mortal sin classified as merely venal by professing ignorance of the sinful nature of the act or that the act was involuntary.
Speaking of mortal sins, years ago Harper’s Magazine commissioned seven advertising agencies to each produce an advertisement for one of the seven mortal sins. I particularly like the ad for Envy. The link below will open the ads in a Powerpoint slide show.
This new Pope, I think, is much more entertaining the any Pope I recall.
