Project Gutenberg

Just in case you haven’t run across the Project Gutenberg, the porject has digitized over 25,000 books, including many obscure titles; and they’re free. There are over 100,000 titles available through “Project Gutenberg Partners, Affiliates and Resources.

There are a number of free ebook reader programs available. A reader is necessary to read the downloaded version of the ebooks, which one may also read on line with a standard browser. Yesterday I downloaded the free Mobipocket ebook Reader, both to my laptop and to my Sony Ericsson smartphone.

Yesterday I also downloaded “Mexico” by Charles Reginald Enock, written in 1909 and last reissued in 1919, to both my laptop and phone; and can report that everything worked as advertised. The laptop/desktop Windows PC Mobipocket reader presents the book in paperback format, with facing pages, and is quite readable. The phone version is also quite readable, though, as with anything presented on the small screen, not nearly so as on my laptop.
