Completing My Third Year

Today marks the end of my third year of expatriation and I still have had no regrets of my decision to sell everything and leave the USA.

During my three years I have learned how to apply for and obtain a residency visa; open a bank account; buy a vehicle and insurance; apply for and obtain a menaje de casa visa authorizing me to import household items and actually importing them; and lots of other aspects of living here. Every day I learn more.

August marked the end of my second year here in Xalapa and I have decided to remain in the area. I find the climate and setting agreeable. Living in my Centro apartment is convenient, as I am able to walk to obtain everything I need in terms of supplies and entertainment; but I am feeling ready for a change. I am tiring of the traffic, smog, barking dogs, and a lack of a gardening space. Thus, I am looking another place to live, whether to buy or rent I am not particular.

As always I will keep my six readers informed.

  • Hi Chris,

Congrats on your third year. I wondered if you were going to move to Puerto Escondido, as you mentioned some time ago. Sounds like you’re content in Xalapa.

Jody and I are right now in Oaxaca. Got here last Friday, staying till this Saturday. We really like it here. Interesting buildings, nice cool temperature, interesting politics…on Monday I watched a demonstration in the Zocalo by the communist party. Hadn’t seen banners with the hammer and sickle since my college days hanging out in Berkeley.

    Adios,

    Neil

  • Hey Neil,

Nice to hear from you, as always.

I do very much like Puerto Escondido but it’s too hot for me, as a place to live.

When I was in Oaxaca a waiter a a zocalo front restaurant told me that the government offices were moved from the building on the zocalo and dispersed around town as the frequent demonstrations disrupt the conduct of business.

There are occasionally demonstrations here which feature the hammer and sickle but most often lately there are demonstrations related to Calderon’s proposed changes to Pemex.

Saludos a Jody and enjoy your trip.
